"A-YO" is a song by Lady Gaga and was supposed to serve as the second single from her fifth studio album, Joanne, until Million Reasons replaced it because of it's success. "A-YO" was written with Hillary Lindsey, Mark Ronson, and BloodPop, and was produced by the same, excluding Hillary. The song was released digitally on October 18, 2016, included in the pre-order for Joanne. [1] The song was sent to radio on the same date. [2]

Background

"A-YO" is one of the songs on the album co-written with Hillary Lindsey, and borrows elements from both country and folk music. The rootsy outlaw track is about doing your own thing and spitting in the face of those who don't like it. When asked if the song was about cigarettes, haters, or sex, Gaga responded with "All of the above. Leavin ur haters in the dust is a sexy feelin, drag em' like a smoke, leave ur blazin' tracks in the road #AYO."[3] When asked on Lady Gaga's Twitter, on October 16th, 2016, what does "A-YO" mean, she answered, explaining some lyrics of the song, ""A-YO, A-YO were smokin 'em all" is like "hey you, let's celebrate. Were leavin our haters in the dust." 💃" [4]

In an interview with Howard Stern on October 24th, 2016, when asked to tell about "A-YO", Lady Gaga said, "This [song] is for your haters", as Howard Stern played it on air. When asked how long did it take to write this song, she answered, "10 minutes with Hillary [Lindsey] [...] We were in my living room". Also, Lady Gaga admitted" that is a hit record. When I hear that record, it’s like every part of my body wants to explode and dance."

The line "mirror on the celling" is a reference to watching one's self having sexual intercourse, as well as "light me up and breathe in" suggesting one's sexual partner needing the other like a cigarette or drugs.

Gaga's dip into Nashville waters is no surprise to those who know her. She told Rolling Stone Country in a 2016 interview that she is a big fan of country music, especially Johnny Cash and Garth Brooks. "When I was little, my father used to play 'Friends In Low Places' really loud in the basement, and I'd catch him down there dancing by himself, screaming real loud. I thought it was cool," she recalled.

Lyrics

Here we go!

I can't wait to smoke them all
Whole pack like Marlboro
Blow it in your face, blow it in your face
Blow it in your, blow it in your face

I can't wait to rev you up
Faster than you can say "Ferrari"
Tearin' up the gravel, watch you unravel
Now it's a party

Hey, I can't wait to cast my spell
Which one you'll never tell
'Cause I got it covered, city gravy southern
Got you drippin' like no other

Get off on me, my body's got you pleadin'
Light me up and breathe in
Mirror on the ceilin'
Off on me, my body's got you pleadin'
Light me up and breathe in
Mirror on the ceiling
A-YO, A-YO
We smokin' 'em all
A-YO, A-YO
We smokin' 'em all
A-YO, A-YO
We smokin' 'em all
A-YO, A-YO

I can't wait to blaze for real
Track burns like a road rail
Spin it in your face, spin it in your face
Play it in your, play it in your face

Can't wait to get you shook up
Faster than you can try to hate it
You can try to hate it, you can try to fake it
But baby, I laced it

Get off on me, my body's got you pleadin'
Light me up and breathe in
Mirror on the ceilin'
Off on me, my body's got you pleadin'
Light me up and breathe in
Mirror on the ceiling
A-YO, A-YO
