Academy Awards (2)

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are a set of 24 awards for artistic and technical merit in the American film industry, given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette, officially called the "Academy Award of Merit", which has become commonly known by its nickname "Oscar". The sculpture was created by George Stanley. The awards, first presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, are overseen by AMPAS.

The awards ceremony was first broadcast on radio in 1930 and televised for the first time in 1953. It is now seen live in more than 200 countries and can be streamed live online. The Academy Awards ceremony is the oldest worldwide entertainment awards ceremony. Its equivalents – the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theater, and the Grammy Awards for music – are modeled after the Academy Awards.

Lyrics

The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears

My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds that rise
From the lake to the trees
My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies
From a church on a breeze

To laugh like a brook when it trips
And falls over stones on its way
To sing through the night
Like a lark who is learning to pray

I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
And I'll sing once more

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Bless my homeland forever

Climb ev'ry mountain
Ford ev'ry stream
Follow ev'ry rainbow
Till you find your dream

A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Every day of your life
For as long as you live

Climb ev'ry mountain
Ford ev'ry stream
Follow ev'ry rainbow
Till you find your dream

Background

In an interview on The Graham Norton Show, recorded in May 2020, Lady Gaga recalled hanging out with Madonna and heading to Taco Bell in her 128-carat Tiffany diamond necklace valued at $30 million after the 2019 Oscars.

So then I won Oscar. And I was so excited. And I'm having champagne and I'm drinking... and my sister was my date, so, you know, like, we're really barreling through the champagne backstage with the Oscar. And I just leave, and I leave with the diamond on and I didn't tell anyone, like, I just left. Tiffany started freaking out. They were like, "She's gone! She left with the diamond!" [smiles]. And actually, I went to go hang out with Madonna at her manager's house. And I got to the house and I was just chilling with Madonna, while all these security guards were like [leans to the side, looking somewhere], just side eyeing me from, you know, every corner of the room. And every time I hugged someone, they would, like, get a little closer to make sure it was still on. And then I left, and I really wanted to go to Taco Bell. So we were trying to go to Taco Bell [chuckles] and then all of a sudden the car got pulled over by Tiffany's security and it was very politely removed from my neck.

—Lady Gaga on The Graham Norton Show

In the video "Life In Looks" for British Vogue, Lady Gaga shared some pleasant memories from this event:

I felt like a princess in [a dress by Brandon Maxwell] and I felt like a little girl. It was a very simple, beautifully made, black dress, and I won my first Oscar in that dress. I remember I also had to be in charge of taking care of that Tiffany's diamond that Audrey Hepburn wore. No one had worn it since she wore it for Breakfast at Tiffany's. So, I was the first person to wear it, and I remember I left the Oscars to go to a party and I left security behind and everybody was mad at me. [laughs] Sorry. Sorry, Tiffany's. I love you and you got your diamond back.

Acceptance speech
Thank you so much to The Academy for this wonderful honor. Thank you to every person in the room. To Mark, Anthony, Andrew, my cowriters; I love them so much. To my sister, my soulmate, I love you. My family's here, I love you, Mom and Dad. Bradley, there is not a single person on the planet that could've sang this song with me but you. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you so much. And if you are at home, and you're sitting on your couch and you're watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work. I've worked hard for a long time, and it's not about, you know...it's not about winning. But what it's about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it. There's a discipline for passion. And it's not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down or you're beaten up. It's about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going. Thank you!

Performance

Setlist
  1. "Hold My Hand"

Before performing "Hold My Hand", Lady Gaga said the following about the song:

I wrote this song with my friend BloodPop® for the film Top Gun: Maverick in my studio basement. It’s deeply personal for me, and I think that we all need each other. We need a lot of love to walk through this life, and we all need a hero sometimes. There’s heroes all around us, in unassuming places, but you might find that you can be your own hero even if you feel broken inside.

—Lady Gaga at Academy Awards

Lady Gaga then delivered a stripped-down version of the Maverick power ballad, with just a piano for accompaniment for the first verse and chorus, before being joined by drums and bass for the remainder of the performance. It was an appropriate raw and intimate-feeling version of the song, given its emotional introduction.
