Lady Gaga revealed through a track by track overview of ARTPOP on The Howard Stern Show that the song is about being able to get dressed up and feel like you own the world, as she describes in the lyrics.
"I think sometimes people always thought that when i was getting dressed up or, you know, putting on my outfits, or doing my live shows that it was for attention, but I really feel a sense of growth and a feel of confidence about myself and I'm able to transform, and that's what this is about, and I think other people do too, just maybe on a smaller scale than I do."
- This is the second song written by Gaga with the title, "Fashion", and the fourth overall to feature the word. The others being "Fashion" (2009), "Fashion of His Love" and "Black Jesus † Amen Fashion".
- Gaga references "Marry the Night" in the line 'married to the night'.
- "Fashion!" was the only song title that wasn't mentioned prior the track list release.
