"Fashion" is a song written in 2007, by Lady Gaga and RedOne, for Sex and the City. In 2008, RedOne decided to give the song to Heidi Montag. Her cover was received with a poor reception, which resulted in a delay of Montag's debut album, Superficial. Moreover, Montag stated that she wanted new material that hadn't been heard before. Shortly after Montag's version was unofficially released, RedOne released a statement.

On December 4, 2008, the original version by Lady Gaga was featured on an Ugly Betty episode titled "Bad Amanda". The song was also put on the Confessions of a Shopaholic Original Soundtrack released on February 17, 2009. After Gaga released her version of the song, Spencer Pratt, Montag's husband, went on record saying "Lady Gaga is repulsive!" and "Heidi's a far more talented artist, and her version of 'Fashion' kills Lady Gaga's."
On March 13, 2012, "Fashion" was revealed to be the theme song for the NBC series "Fashion Star", hosted by supermodel Elle MacPherson and featuring mentors Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos and Nicole Richie.
Performances
The song was performed briefly in 2009 during the first North American leg of The Monster Ball Tour. During the performance, only Gaga and one dancer were present on-stage.
