Lady Gaga took the stage on Good Morning America to put a very old Hollywood spin on her song "Applause," by paying homage to the 1939 Judy Garland classic, The Wizard of Oz. Wearing a blue-and-white gingham dress like Dorothy's, she first performed "Over the Rainbow" with Frederic Aspiras' dog, Fozzi, serving as a Toto stand-in. She sang the track to the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man (who would later serve as her back-up dancers) before declaring, "Well, I live for your applause. Shall we make our way to Oz?"
The theatrical performance included audience members wearing poppy hats and a yellow brick road. At one point Lady Gaga changed out of her Dorothy attire to rock a Glinda the Good Witch dress and then stripped down to her black "Applause" leotard to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. It was all capped off when she re-emerged in her Dorothy gingham with big hair and a bow.
[Dorothy]: Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high. There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue. And the dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true
[Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion]: Oh Dorothy, we love to hear you sing
[Dorothy]: Well, I live for your applause. Shall we make our way to Oz?
[Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion]: Let's go

Interview
During an interview, when asked what made her decide to bring Dorothy to life in such an imminent of way, Lady Gaga answered:
“ | I think it really is an explanation in a way from my entire career so far. And, you know, even with the [MTV] VMA performance and then the transformations that were happening today, it's, like, my way of saying all these the outfits and all of these wigs that I've been changing in over the years, this is my way of assimilating and this is my way of surviving, this is my way of getting to Oz to have all my dreams come true. So, whatever we had to do to get past the evil monkeys from the West, to get past the Wicked Witch, Dorothy was able to transform in order to survive by transforming into Glinda and then by transforming at the end back into the Wizard who was just Dorothy herself, me. | ” |
When asked how much ARTPOP differs from Born This Way, Lady Gaga answered also revealing the meaning behind ARTPOP:
“ | I think every person in their life goes through so many different things. And I was actually going through a hard time during Born This Way. I was kind of insecure. And I became a star really quickly and I didn't have time to really put my feet in the ground and have a sense of myself through it all because it's like a machine and you just keep going and there's TVs and pictures and lovely fans everywhere that I wanted to hug and sign autographs for. So, there was a lot of me putting things on, I think, to hide that sadness and the record reflected that. But I'm really-- I'm feeling so positive and healed in a lot of ways and I feel really overjoyed and full of love. And I'm obsessed with making things colorful and happy. And I think it's because I'm in a happy place. So, when I'm in a happy place the music is and I have to thank my fans for that because no matter what I go through and no matter how I evolve they always stand by me because they appreciate my point of view. And that's what ARTPOP is about: I want them to know - appreciate their points of view. And when, you know, they're harnessing their talents, you know, whatever your talents may be. I want you to know that your talents are important and that just because you want to be an artist and maybe not a doctor, or a nurse, or a teacher, it doesn't mean that it's less than that, it doesn't mean that you still can't survive. In fact, in the, you know, economy that we live in it's actually wonderful to have a niche business that has specialized things to offer. It's much more lucrative for you in the future actually. So, please, you know, express your talents, show who you are and express it through whatever way you want. | ” |
