The Monster Pit refers to a limited number of place area located in the general admission (floor) of select dates of the tour.

On February 6, 2012, Gaga tweeted that the central area within the stage will be known as "The Monster Pit", which is regulated to general admission fans who were the first to arrive. Every night, the Haus of Gaga will also choose fans from the Monster Pit to come backstage and meet Gaga. On Lady Gaga's official website, the rules of eligibility for the Monster Pit were described in more detail.

Eligibility details

  • Due to venue capacity issues, only those with GA floor tickets will be eligible to earn Monster Pit access.
  • For safety & security reasons, fans won't be permitted to line up at the venue before 8am local time the day of the show; those with GA floor tickets can line up in the Monster Pit eligibility line. The afternoon of each show, Monster Pit access wristbands will be distributed to GA floor ticket holders who have arrived first, waited the longest, and are dressed to "Ball."
  • The first person in line for the Monster Pit will receive a key.
  • A very limited amount of Monster Pit passes will be held and distributed at random each night for those who do NOT have GA floor tickets; these will be awarded to fans who arrived first, waited longest, + dressed to "Ball" but who do not have GA floor tickets.

For the 2013 dates, the rules were updated because of "the increased likelihood of adverse weather conditions, the Monster Pit rules have changed for the North American leg of the Born This Way Ball".

  • Due to venue capacity issues, only those with GA floor tickets will be eligible to earn Monster Pit access.
  • For safety & security reasons, fans won't be permitted to line up at the venue before 8:00am local time the day of the show. Those with GA floor tickets can line up in the Monster Pit eligibility line beginning at 8:00am on the day of the show.
    • At 9:00am local time each day, BTWB staff will identify the Monster Pit key holder and numbered wristbands will be distributed to those in line on a first-come, first-served basis to GA floor ticket holders who have arrived first and dressed to "Ball" (limited quantities are available each day). These wristbands guarantee your spot in the Monster Pit for the show that night, along with your place in line for entrance into the pit when doors open. Upon distribution of these numbered wristbands, BTWB staff will confirm a meeting point for later in the day.
    • The line will be closed after all numbered wristbands are distributed each morning at 9:00am, and fans are encouraged to go home, find a local coffee shop, or otherwise leave the premises. This leg of the BTWB is during the winter and for safety reasons we insist that fans not wait outside in the cold all day. The Monster Pit line re-opens daily at 4:00pm ONLY for those who received numbered wristbands that morning, and fans must line up in numerical order based on their wristband number. As these fans enter the venue, their numbered wristbands must be exchanged for the actual Monster Pit access wristband which will not be given out prior to doors. If you do not have your numbered wristband or lost it, you unfortunately will not be able to enter the Pit.
  • To ensure those who receive numbered wristbands have access to the Born Brave Bus experience, those with numbered wristbands will have exclusive access to the BBB from 3:00pm-4:00pm each day. Fans are encouraged to visit the bus and learn more about the Born This Way Foundation prior to re-entering the Monster Pit line at 4:00pm. Keep in mind that your place in line is guaranteed based on the number you receive in the morning. Except that The Born Brave Bus will not be present at the shows in Canada.
  • Any fans who arrive to the venue prior to 8:00am local time on the day of any show will be automatically disqualified from eligibility for Monster Pit access.
  • A VERY limited amount of Monster Pit passes will be held and distributed at random each night for those who do NOT have GA floor tickets. These will be awarded to random fans once they are already inside the venue.
  • To give as many fans as possible a chance to win, no fan can be the Monster Pit key holder more than once.
  • Eligibility rules may vary from venue to venue. Please check the rules listed on the LadyGaga.com event listing for your specific show for the full rules.

Holder of the Monster Pit key

The first person in line for the Monster Pit is awarded a key, which symbolically opens the Monster Pit for each date. They are called the "Holders of the Monster Pit key". Each leg of the tour also have a metallic gold and black key which is signed by all the related key holders.

After each show, Gaga's team uploads a picture with the holder on LittleMonsters.com, who are all meant to sign them on their respective keys. On dates with venues that are to small for the Monster Pit, the first person on the General Admissions line is awarded the key.

The music played in the venue before the show is composed of classical pieces instead of Michael Jackson's tracks which was used for her Monster Ball Tour. Depending of the leg, different opening acts debuted the show with each a 30 minutes set.

  1. Zedd — April 27 to May 31, 2012 + February 25 to March 16, 2013

  3. Von Smith — June 14, 2012 only
  4. The Darkness (European Leg)
  5. Madeon — January 11 to February 22, 2013
Shortly after the last opening act performed, Gaga will take the stage for two hours and go through five acts. The runtime of the show exceeded two hours on the first shows but was decreased following the Asia and Oceania leg of the tour in order to fit under two hours.

From the rehearsal in the United States to the rehearsals in Seoul, the cloudy backdrops was removed. From April 27 to May 13, 2012, the castle was bigger because there was one more tower on the right. But, ever since May 17, 2012, the castle got smaller because that tower was removed; with or without Monster Pit. For the modification or the added props, see the summary below as they are described in their respective sections.

Space Intro

The show begins on G.O.A.T., a Government Owned Alien Territory in space with a "space" inspired instrumental track. This is followed by the "Kingdom of Fame" castle lighting up with purple lights whilst fog covers the ground. After a couple of seconds, a marching beat kicks in and shortly after, the left door next to the outer gate open with seven soldiers walking onstage, four of them with G.O.A.T. flags and the remaining three with guns. The marching beats slowly evolve into the beats of "Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)" (heard on 0:15 on the album version). They walk across the stage for a while before Gaga make her appearance on a mechanical unicorn with her hands on her back as she is a prisoner. She has an escort comprised of three guards coming from the same gate as before. The introduction lasts around 1:30 to 2 minutes.

Depending if the venue had a Monster Pit, the escort (and later the escort with Gaga) would walk across the catwalk surrounding the Monster Pit. On the dates without it, they would walk on the stage instead.

Notes
  • On the first dates, the show began in pitch black with strobing white lights revealing temporarily part of the castle and the guards. This was sooner replaced with purple lights on the castle and strobing purple lights projecting across the venue.
  • From October 6, 2012 to December 12, 2012, yellow and blue lights were added to the usual purple, changing colors according to the beats of the introduction.
  • On February 8, 2013, before the Space intro begins, there was a speech saying "Citizens of G.O.A.T., we have captured the creature! Her freedom is ours, forever."

"Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)"

"Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)" then begins in a shortened version (about 2:10), starting after the first 25 seconds at "Run, run with her t-" until the full first chorus is performed then followed by the final verses of the song ("Get your hot rods ready to rumble"). Near the end, the escort and Gaga returns to the inside of the castle. Depending of the use of a Monster Pit, the song would be performed on the stage or around the Monster Pit as explained before.

Notes
  • On the first dates, the song was performed with the same lights as the "Space" introduction.
  • Since her performance at the Armeets Arena, boom lights have been added to each show.
  • Wings by Void of Course were added to Asiel Hardison's costume.

Operation: Kill The Bitch interlude

At the end of "Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)" the sound of machine guns firing can be heard as Gaga escape behind the scenes. This is followed by a repeating beeping sound (sonar like) while moving spotlights are searching accross the castle for Gaga. The interlude ends with a pre-recorded dialogue from the main antagonist and narrator of the story, "Mother G.O.A.T." :

Mother G.O.A.T., the antagonist of the story.
Initiating satellite. Space renagade Lady Gaga has escaped. Downloading image of prisoner. Alien fugitive objective: To birth a new race. Operation: Kill the bitch!.

At the starts of her speech, "Mother G.O.A.T." is a giant diamond shaped structure with pink neon lights on the edge of it. "Mother G.O.A.T." also has a skull projection in the middle as her "face". At the line "Downloading image of prisoner", the skull merges into Gaga's face with prosthetic horns. Her voice has a strong French accent and she speaks in a very slowly manner. She ends the interlude by taking a very low tone to say "Kill the bitch!".

Notes
  • MammothVision created Mother G.O.A.T. visuals by capturing Gaga performance with a proprietary multi-camera rig. The visuals were projected on a giant head screen by Contour Entertainment.
  • On the first dates, Gaga was seen walking on the 2nd levels of the castle, hiding from the spotlights. But after Gaga has fallen twice during that act (including the opening night), that no longer was made.

"Government Hooker"

The Born This Way Ball Tour Government Hooker 013

Gaga at the beginning of the song.

After the voice-over, Gaga is heard singing the opera-like opening vocals of "Government Hooker". She continues with the song while she comes down from the upper level of the castle while stopping occasionally to do slow sexual movements. Before she reaches the floor, a dancer sits at a work desk which rises from the stage floor. She mounts the desktop and continues her routine but this time for the President played by David Lei Brandt.

The song stops after the line "As long as you pay me,", she opens the drawer of the desk to take out a gun which she uses to shoot the President. They briefly resume the song with a final lines ("I'm gonna drink my tears tonight,"). She then goes to the main gate of the castle and opens it by firing a shot directly at it. This is followed with Gaga saying "Welcome to the Born This Way Ball" before fleeing offstage.

Notes
  • During the first show in Hong Kong (May 2nd, 2012), her mic went out and she performed the song without singing.
  • Since the shows in Hong Kong, she wears the original outfit with leggings on her arms and legs.
  • During the first show in Seoul, only blue lights were used.
  • Starting with the first show in Hong Kong, half of the lights were red, and the other half were blue.

"Born This Way"

The song begins with an extended introduction of "Born This Way" for 2 minutes. During that time, the castle opens up by rotating the front part (outer gate) which is comprised of two pieces that rotate on each side of the stage. A scene from the short film for "Fame" is shown on the left side of the castle. Near the end of the musical interlude, a Gaga is heard and seen birthing a new race onstage while it's recovered of fog. This segment elvolved from using only two giant legs with black Christian Louboutin with the signature red sole to giant legs with part of her latex dress to the final version with the two legs, a giant belly with a zipper and a navel piercing with muscles painted on the props. The inflatable was made by Rob Harries (Air Artists). They also added projection of footage from Steven Klein (for "Fame") with Gaga being shown behind the legs as it is her body. She then gave birth to the new race which is followed by "Born This Way". All the dancers and Gaga are wearing translucent pale yellow latex outfits. The dancers' hair are recovered of a goo-ish texture like a new born baby. The choreography is the same as in the music video. Gaga, near the end of the song, walks into the castle while singing the last part. The dancers follow at the end of the song. The lights go out.

Notes
  • From April 27th, 2012 to May 2, 2012, Gaga's outfit had additional sleeves to cover her arms for unknown reasons.
  • From May 5, 2012, the outfit's sleeveless and has cleevage.

Originally performed after "Scheiße," the performance of "Black Jesus † Amen Fashion" began with Lady Gaga removing her shirt while saying, "When they ask you, What did you learn about me? Just remember to tell them this..." She then begins to perform the song. After the performances spot in the set list changed to after "Born This Way," the performance of "Black Jesus † Amen Fashion" began with Lady Gaga and two dancers (Amanda Balen and Montana Efaw) appearing next to a throne, while the other dancers perform to an introduction. This version of the song has more synthesizers than the album version of the song. From June 20, the hat that was released was used for the beginning of the song and not the whole thing

"Bloody Mary"

An interlude (mostly called the "Emerging" interlude) <is played before performing "Bloody Mary". It features ambient music with some techno sounds in the background as the castle goes dark and leaves the gate with blue lights. Scratchy violin sounds are made as Gaga emerges from the castle. She is seen wearing a white outfit with a helmet of the same color while appearing to be skating on the Monster Pit. On dates without a Monster Pit, Lady Gaga skates over the main stage instead. Since February 8, 2013, she cut out the second verse and chorus from the song.

Manifesto of Mother Monster

The Manifesto of Mother Mother interlude consists of a diamond shaped, rotating prism containing an animatronic replication of Lady Gaga's face, with prosthetics, called "Mother G.O.A.T.", which recited the Manifesto of Mother Monster as originally introduced in the video for "Born This Way". From April 27 - May 13, "Mother G.O.A.T." descends to the stage to tell the audience about the Manifesto. From May 17 - present, she stays at the top right of the castle, and is not descending anymore.

"This is the "Manifesto of Mother Monster": On G.O.A.T, a Government Owned Alien Territory in space, a birth of magnificent and magical proportions took place. But the birth was not finite; it was infinite. As the wombs numbered, and the mitosis of the future began, it was perceived that this infamous moment in life is not temporal; it is eternal. And thus began the beginning of the new race: a race within the race of humanity."

"Bad Romance"

Lady Gaga performs "Bad Romance" with its original choreography. On September 18th, 2012, Gaga debuted a new egg prop, from which she emerged at the beginning of the song. Starting from February 2013, the drums are played with the vessel intro.

"Judas"

After "Bad Romance", Gaga says, "When you leave, some of you will stick by me. And others, will betray me. You will not kill me!". After this, two dancer's (Mark Kanemura and Jeremy Hudson) who "betrayed" Lady Gaga tie her up on the castle, at which point she begins to perform "Judas". A shortened version of the song is performed, with only a partial amount of the chorus being sung and the entire second verse being cut. During the song, the dancers continue to try to tie up Lady Gaga, but she retaliates and drives them away by shooting from a gun. Ths song ends with the DJ White Shadow Remix version. However, During the European Leg of the tour, the choreography changed so that 4 male dancers perform with flags which read "G.O.A.T." On June 10, 2012, Jeremy Hudson accidently hit Gaga on the head during the song. The song is performed using the same outfit as "Bad Romance". From June 27 to July 8, Gaga performed with a blue custom outfit which was not used again when the tour resumed in August of 2012.

"Fashion of His Love"

With pink lights and an extended intro, Lady Gaga performs "Fashion of His Love" next to a rotating clothes rack and mirror on the upper level of the castle. The song is performed with an abridged, cutting out the second verse, bridge, and the chorus after the bridge. The song ends abruptly, and immediately transition into "Just Dance". Over the course of the tour, this performance has featured a wide variety of costume changes. Since June 20th, 2012, bedroom walls backdrops were added with some artwork featuring Gaga drawn by Ruben Ter-Sarkissian in the "boudoir". A mannequin with a blond wig was also added. On the next day, Fame, the fragrance could be seen on the boudoir used for the performance. From June 27th, 2012, a picture of Jo Calderone was added on the boudoir. From April 27th to June 10th, 2012, the clothes rack had the dancers outfits from "Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)". From May 18th to June 10th, 2012, a custom faux-fur coat by Moschino was seen hanging on the clothes rack. On June 13th, 2012, the costumes were replaced with previously worn outfits from 2008 to 2012: Bubble dress by Haus of Gaga, Kermit outfit by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Egyptian gold outfit by Zaldy, spiked mirror outfit by Armani Privé, keytar dress by Perry Meek. The custom faux-fur coat by Moschino was the only kept item from the rack. The order of which the clothes are seen are never the same as the technician backstage fill the rack with the selected clothes in no particular order. After a month break, the clothes rack since August 14th, 2012, featured the original white origami dress by Haus of Gaga, the oversized purple jacket by Muto-Little Costumes which replaced the gold outfit by Zaldy. On the various levels of the castle, more "bedroom" backdrops were added along with a canopy bed on the floor.

"Just Dance"

Beginning immediately after "Fashion of His Love", Lady Gaga performs "Just Dance" which begins with an extended intro. During the breakdown, the song shifts to the Robots to Mars remix while Lady Gaga leaves the stage for a costume change. Many of the outfits worn during this performance are the same as the outfits worn during "Fashion of His Love", but occasionally different costumes are used. Almost every show from May 18th, 2012, till the end of the tour, at the beginning of the song, Lady Gaga took off a custom faux-fur coat by Moschino from the clothes rack and carried it in her hands or on her shoulder as she walked up the stairs and sang. Then the stairs were lifted while she was standing with coat on them. As soon as the stairs were lifted, she threw the fur coat in the castle tower by the right side and picked up the keytar. On some shows (for example on November 20th, 2012), Lady Gaga took off a fur coat by Moschino from the clothes rack and walked down the stairs to the stage floor where there was a bed, left the coat there, and then picked up the keytar to play it at the bridge of the song. From July 7th, 2012, till the end of the tour, Gaga played a pink customized keytar while performing the bridge. From August 14th, 2012, till the end of the tour, some photos are projected on the windows of the castle. A bed is also put on the stage floor. The lights illuminating the castle are originally blue in the song, but the show at Armeets Arena had pink lights. From August 16th, 2012, the lights were purple.

During the opening night performance, Lady Gaga performed with a new version of the Disco Stick (dubbed "The Disco Scepter"). However in later shows, It was eventually used for Paparazzi. The performance begins with Gaga appearing in a clear bathtub-like capsule on the runway, often adorned with a crown that resembles the headpiece of the Statue of Liberty and with a joint on one hand. She performs the song with it's original choreography. On dates without a Monster Pit, she performs the song on the main stage.

Mother G.O.A.T. Manifesto II

"Mother G.O.A.T." says: “It was instantly that this enigmatic fugitive became the host agent and body to a new colony. A colony which would strive to extract our most classified information. A monstrous preparation it was. Training and decoding the creativity of rebellion for one purpose: to invade Earth.” This is spoken during a reduced tempo version of the "Electric Chapel" instrumental.

"Heavy Metal Lover"

The instrumetal for "Heavy Metal Lover" begins, with her dancers making a path for Gaga out to the audience. She appears onstage as part of a motorcycle, resembling the album cover for Born This Way. She sings through the first chorus on her with her stomach on the motorcycle. "Americano"

A Spanish guitar intro plays, along with an opening of the castle. Dancing around a meat rack. Near the end, Gaga grabs her gun. During the performance, Lady Gaga appeared wearing a recreation of the Franc Fernandez's Meat Dress she wore at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. On the September 2012 issue of Vogue, Gaga recalled the creation of this performance art piece:

“We were talking about putting the show together, And I said, OK, what if I was someone’s grandma and I was going to a concert tonight. How would I know that it was a Gaga show? And we all just sort of looked at each other and said, ‘The meat dress.’ We talked a lot about the original intention, which was to create an outfit that is indicative of the fact that underneath all of our different skin colors and religions and beliefs, we are all made of flesh and bone. And then this instant image came to my mind, which was from the late seventies, of the woman being put into a meat grinder on the cover of [the June 1978] Hustler [magazine], which really terrified me when I was a child. So I tried to spin all that into a space of humor and politics and sexuality onstage.”

They decided to use a giant meat grinder, quilted and with gold accents along with a meat rack inspired by the magazine cover and the quote from it : "We will no longer hang women up like pieces of meat."

Starting on June 20, Ian McKenzie and Kevin Frey perform a marriage ceremony during the opening guitar riff. Starting on February 8, 2013, she cut the second verse and chorus from the song. She also does not wear the meat dress starting from this date, but instead a bikini top and skirt made to resemble meat.

"Poker Face"

Before the song, Gaga says, "In 1978, Larry Flynt declared that women will no longer be treated as meat on the cover of Hustler magazine, but in the Born This Way Ball, meat is precisely how we treat them." Lady Gaga then removes the skirt of her meat dress, and the dress transforms into a meat leotard, but starting on February 8, 2013, Since Gaga does not wear the meat dress during Americano, she simply removes the meat skirt from around her waist which reveals a bikini bottom, and the costume transforms into a meat bikini. Gaga then begins performing the original choreography. At the end of the song, Asiel grabs Gaga and puts her in the meat grinder machine as the boys treat her like meat and is lowered into the stage with the machine, similar to her performance at 52nd Grammy Awards.

Starting on January 29, 2013, Gaga cut the second verse and chorus from the song.

"Alejandro"

There is an extended intro, giving Gaga time for a outfit change, then raise her and the meat "sofa" onstage. Her male dancers are all wearing boxers with military boots. At the end of the song, Gaga and some male dancers are lowered with the meat sofa. When the show returned last August 14 in Sofia, Bulgaria, in the bridge of the song, they start using the runway. On the dates without Monster Pit ever since August 14, they just go around the stage for the bridge.

"Paparazzi"

At the beginning of "Paparazzi", the "Mother G.O.A.T." is seen flying around the castle while miming singing the words to the song. Only 1 minute into the song, the castle opens and Gaga arrives in a new outfit. At the end of the song, Gaga shoots and kills "Mother G.O.A.T.". She expains that her training on G.O.A.T. is completed. She usually said after killing her : "I'm sorry but she had to go." or saying that Mother G.O.A.T is a robot. Note: This is the second tour in which the song's performance were Gaga kills someone. The first one was the Monster Ball Tour 2.0 performance, where she killed the Angler Fish (a.k.a. The Fame Monster). At the end of the song, Gaga explained that she was about to leave G.O.A.T. in order to invade Earth. • On June 13, Gaga replaced the gun with the new Disco Scepter. Unlike the Monster Ball's Disco Torch, It has chrome blades surrounding the sphere/tube in place of acrylic crystals and like the Torch, it also has multiples lights hidden inside the pole.

"Scheiße"

After killing Mother G.O.A.T., Lady Gaga is no longer at risk of being hunted for being a fugitive. Following her speech, Gaga introduced the song by saying "I don't speak (language of the country) but I can if you like" which was followed by the pre-recorded 'Owww' found on the album version. She began "Scheiße" from Born This Way by singing acappella the first verse of the song while her dancers arrived onstage. After which, she begins a heavily choreographed dance sequence with her dancers. For select shows, Gaga brought some fans to join them onstage to perform the choreography. At the end of the song, Gaga usually said "Good night everybody," then leaving the stage, and had the lights turned off, as if the show had ended.
